We’re also proud to announce that Voxhaul Broadcast and Mona will be joining us on our upcoming North American Spring Tour, beginning May 7. (To find out which band will be playing which dates, click to read the rest of the post.)
Voxhaul Broadcast
[Debut album] Timing Is Everything brings a nostalgic sound but effectively sets itself apart from the current indie scene. It alludes to Arcade Fire and echos The Duke Spirit. Underneath are remnants of Minus The Bear, even M83. But nonetheless it has a fresh, organic feel. Voxhaul Broadcast isn’t the typical Silverlake band you’d expect to see on any given night at The Echo. They are skillful musicians, indisputably. There’s definitely something about the synchronicity of all the players that make this such a solid, pleasant record to listen to from start to finish – most likely due to the fact that the band members are all longtime friends. Their instruments layer together in a satisfying, intrinsic fashion. Frontman David Dennis blends it all together with resonating lyrics, while Anthony Aguilar’s sprightly guitar parts help carry an upbeat emotion on all 13 tracks. – LA Music Blog

Mona
“I know we’re a bunch of rednecks from Nashville but c’mon, Brooklyn, give us more than that,” spits singer Nick Brown, in a sassy attempt to get the crowd on his band’s side early on. The real persuading, though, is in the first few songs, all of which whizz by in a blur that comes stunningly close to justifying their status as 2011’s Best New American Import. Both ‘Trouble On The Way’ and ‘Teenager’ come at you like airborne shots of adrenalin, brimming with the kind of choruses that you can cash in at the bank. Mona then decide to unveil their arena ambitions with ‘Lines In The Sand’ – a towering piece of whiskey-stained soul that could stop traffic. For this dazzling quarter of an hour, the band seem like instant stars rather than just hot prospects. – NME

We’re excited to announce some of the support bands for our Origins Tour in the U.S., beginning April 25. (This is a partial list, and more bands will be announced soon.)
Tue Apr 26 – Los Angeles, CA – Troubadour:
White Sea
[Debut EP] This Frontier embodies the multifaceted nature of [Morgan] Kibby’s cosmos, which draws inspiration from disco bass lines, ’60s spaghetti westerns and the envelope-pushing work of Ennio Morricone’s soundtracks. The five-song indie-pop EP explodes with cinematic crescendos, tinkling chimes, shining harmonies, dramatic bass lines, party beats, tempered synthesizers, all threaded by Kibby’s unmistakable, angelic voice. Fused in layered textural complexity and cascading vocals, the scope of material defies categorization other than anthemic, dancey, and rich with harmonies, proving Kibby to be entirely more than just a pretty voice. – Plug In Music
Listen to “Lady Killer” HERE.
Wed Apr 27 – Los Angeles, CA – El Rey:
White Arrows
Much like Brooklyn band Suckers, White Arrows’ sound is hard to define because from song to song, you’ll find yourself tossing out a variety of reference points and “this reminds me of [insert band name]” moments. That doesn’t make their sound derivative, just exploratory. In just their debut EP, you’ll get elements that conjure up different genres and different eras. For example, a song like “Coming or Going” has bits (particularly in the vocals/lyrics) that feel like they could have come from the hair metal days of the ’80s and bits that sound like they could have come off a Rapture record, then that track moves into “City Boy”, which keeps the Rapture influence, but moves to a Arctic Monkeys kind of vibe. Suffice it to say, their tunes are good times. – Crawdaddy! Magazine

When we first recorded the song “Changing,” we had decided to cut the drums on the third verse and just clap and stomp instead. So we all got in a room at Dave Sardy’s studio and did just that. Hit record, clap and stomp—which wasn’t something we were used to as a rock and roll band. It struck us then (it became a running joke) how much this was like step dancing. The idea of the body being your drum.
So we decided to find a step dancing crew and see what it would be like to do a video with them. A friend of a friend named Reese was in a group called the Strikers All-Stars. They were from Florida. They’d moved to L.A. to pursue dancing full-time. We thought it was a good story so we called them up and asked them if they’d like to do a video with us. We had no idea if it would work.
But then, when we got in a room with them and saw them perform up close, we were mesmerized. They were world-class dancers and seeing anything that precise and difficult up close is just amazing. (We’ve done collaborations with a world-class string quartet—the Calder Quartet, and thought well, this will just be another.) So we did a video. (the original “Changing” video.) We decided it was 1968 and this was the coolest speakeasy in town. It was a sort of early rock and roll yet proto hip-hop party. That was the idea. On set, it actually became a party in which the end of the video was unscripted—just a spontaneous jumping dance circle.
So for this Bombastic video we thought we’d try to do a live version of what we did in the official music video. We knew it was a bit of a high-wire act: an acoustic performance of a rock and roll song with a late ’60s proto hip-hop dance element. But then after one take we were just screwing around and having fun with it. It’s funny how musical genres can seem so strict, you know—this is rock and roll, this is hip-hop or whatever. But then it didn’t seem like that at all when we shot this stuff. They were eager to dance, we were eager to play, and afterward it just felt like a really good party we went to one night.
