So what bands have people been to see lately and were they any good?

Recently seen Warpaint, love the album but live they are even better, would suggest anyone to try to catch them live, gone down a storm here in the UK. One of my gigs of the year for this year.

Also seen loads of local bands playing some small venues round Leeds, Runaround Kids probably been the best of a really good bunch.

Last show I went to was Cold War Kids at the Glasshouse in Pomona. For those of you who don't know CWK are a Los Angeles band (from Long Beach to be exact) and they're pretty damn good. They're not terribly exciting live but they are consistantly good. I heard about this show last minute and it was only 20 bucks so I figured I'd watch them again.

I'm excited for the next show I'm going to which is Dead Kennedys (or what's left of them) at HOB on Sunset.

I saw Muse in Atlanta. This was my second time seeing them and I agree with mpw. The towers they are using on this tour are freaking sweet. I've never seen a stage like that.

I just found out about The National. (Thank you AltNation on Sirius!) Hopefully they'll make a stop in Charlotte or Atlanta to support the new album.

Febs a busy month for me..... saw Miles Kane put on a really good show in Leeds last month and The Joy Formidable launch their debut album "The Big Roar" in fine style at The Borderline a couple of weeks back..... bit of a panic getting a second ticket but luckily managed it and so glad we went, despite my car costing me a small fortune that week! :o(

Anyway, this month.... saw Chapel Club last night, brilliant show once again from them.
    Feeder tonight @ Leeds Academy
The Joy Formidable @ Leeds Cockpit (Weds)
    TATE @ Heaven (Thurs)
The Joy Formidable @ The Plug, Sheffield (Fri)
Doll & the Kicks (been assured they are good!) in York
Runaround Kids (saw them last week too!) in Wakefield
    Bleech @ The Hop, Wakefield
The Streets @ Leeds Academy........ last album & tour ever :o(
And also got front row tickets to take my 7y/o daughter to see her favourite wildlife TV presenter, Steve Backshall, in Harrogate as an extra special birthday surprize, I think she'll explode when she sees him! lol

Hope you're all seeing some good and interesting bands... feel free to share them, don't be selfish!

Yesterday I saw Deine Lakaien here at nürnberg. It was the ninth time I saw them since 1990 or so.

It was a great show with a small crowd of about 400 fans, 2 1/4 hours of gothic music :-)

If you have not already heard of "We were promised jetpacks", they're awesome!!!!!!
I saw them last year at the Troubadour and I can say it was one of the best shows that I have been to.
Nobody knows much about them. YET.

    Roclawzi,
I jut purchased tickets to see Rise Against in concert. Cost of tickets: $55.00. Total cost when TicketMonster was done holding me upside down by my feet and shaking all the loose change out of my pockets? $85.00. TicketMonster took $20.00 in nasty "Convenience Fees" and another $5.00 for "Handling". That's 50% of the actual ticket price. Just thought I'd rile you up :-)

I think it says something that you've gone to rile me up on the Ticketmonster issue on a thread I haven't even posted on. Apparently, my Ticketmonster hate bleeds through the whole boards!

Annnnd....since we're on the subject of those greedy bastards, let's see what's going on with Pearl Jam. Why Pearl Jam? In 1994, for those who don't know, Pearl Jam couldn't be bigger if they were comprised of Jesus Christ, Doctor Manhattan, the reanimated corpse of John Lennon bound to zombie Jim Morrison (three legged race style) and the keyboard playing cat off of youtube. So, Pearl Jam decided that they didn't want to fleece their fans, and wanted to keep their ticket prices reasonable. They charged 18 bucks a ticket, and wanted Ticketbastard to charge no more than 1.80 service charge. Ticketbastard refused, there was a lot of bickering and fighting and a federal antitrust lawsuit and ultimately, Pearl Jam cancelled their 1994 tour and spent the next 4 years trying to play anywhere they could, building venues, playing out of country, in strange places you've never heard of like "Toronto".

The upshot? They had to come back to Ticketbastard. Ticketmonster had exclusive contracts with EVERY major venue, so if Pearl Jam wanted to be there for their fans, they had to cede the right of Prima Nocta to Ticketmonster. (That's pretty much a Braveheart reference, since to the best of my knowledge that right never really existed, but I'll save you a google trip. In Braveheart, "Prima Nocta" was the supposed right of the feudal lords to be the first one to wiggle their aristocratic palm dogs into the virgin brides on their wedding nights.)

Point is, really, that it hurt Pearl Jam. The 1994 concert was supposed about 3-4 million lost, and god knows what it cost them for the next 4 years, as the inability to tour really hurts a fan base. We are spoiled by how much TATE tours. I don't think Pearl Jam recovered, and while music moved away from the grunge sound anyway, I think this hastened the change. With Pearl Jam virtually blocked from US touring and Kurt Cobain...unavailable...(you don't want to know what I almost wrote), the whole genre lost their lead acts. It would be as if someone dropped a sandbag on Justin Bieber's head from the auxiliary catwalk at the O2 on March 9th...the one that is accessible to the general public through a broken gate behind the easternmost concession stand through a door who's security code has been 9919 since the O2 first opened...and killed him dead, what would happen to the entire "flaccid pop" movement? God knows! But I'd ditch that stock in autotune before it's too late.

Barely relevant: I told my gym that I was going to cancel my membership if they didn't take One Less Lonely Girl off their playlist. Apparently, I was not the only one, because it happened.

Anyway, I'm far from a point, all of you know Ticketmonster provides a service in a monopolistic fashion, and since it's a service that is essential to anyone who likes to go out and do something other than "the same thing every damn night", they grind us for it. And grind us hard. Like the sort of grinding that leaves you with an obvious zipper burn down the side of your c***.

My analogy for the day is...Ticketmonster is like a pay toilet that adjusts it's fees inversely proportionate to the amount of time you have before you're going to add a new character to your Justice League underroos.

    Ok, Rant over.
