Honestly, in the second to last verse, I've no idea what he's saying. First time I heard it, I thought he said "born to be a thespian not a king" and I'm sure the line before that is just completely inaccurate. Please, if you know, tell me, I'm so curious.

    I never knew my mother
I can't say it was so bad
She was still a girl of seventeen
The night she met my dad
He was just six months out of Chino
Tryin' his hardest to stay clean

When they'd sing and they'd sing and they'd sing
Like doves sleepin' with broken wings
In a bed fit for a king

    It didn't mean a thing

    It was a shotgun-forced wedding
And they forgot to bring the guns
    They were busy countin' promises
To the children not yet born
No one could afford the ride
Everyone hitched up the one oh one

And they'd sing and they'd sing and they'd sing
Like doves dancin' with broken wings
With a view fit for a king

    It didn't mean a thing

It was a lonliness they would confess
Like the world had gone bad, I guess
So they hold hands lookin' to the eyes of God

They say, "Tell me, why'd you hide from us?
Why'd you fill the world with wickedness?
Why'd you spare us from your grace but not the wrong?"

Now my dad says, "Fuck the teachers,
Just keep your head down hard
Gotta find yourself alone before you'll find the eyes of God"

You may be broke and scared
And mad a tear at the flesh of your own odd screams
But you were born to be a peasant not a king

So just stop actin' like you're runnin' form something
You're gonna leave the way you came without a thing
With you're heart tied to your mind tied to a string
You just sing and you sing and you sing

    It doesn't mean a thing

Fuck the details, not fuck the teachers. Trying to listen for words for the last part for confirmation now.

<edit> Yeah, the odd scream line, I can't hear anything else but that, but I'm not convinced that's it, just as you aren't.

Holy crap, Brian, I think you're right. I totally didn't catch that at all. Both lines fit so well, I just assumed...good catch.

I believe the line is you were born to be a peasant not a king.

I'm going back and forth on this one. Peasant fits the lyrics better, in my opinion, but it looks like they pronounce a D on the video...

Oh yeah, it is 'peasant.' I listened to live versions on youtube. He actually enunciates properly in one of them.

I'm afraid we can't let this just fall through the cracks, Brian. I thought you were on to something and you weren't and now that makes me look wrong, too. I can't be having that. I suggest having a quick drink or two while I run down to the hardware store for the brass hinges and 2 x 8 boards that will comprise what we in *not Australia* like to refer to as "The Apology Clapper".

I'm pretty sure the lyric is "Why'd you spare us from your grace but not the rod?" It's referencing a verse in Proverbs.

isn't it "wrath" instead of rod or wrong? :) -

Well looking on a load of lyrics websites the overall verdict seemed to be rod. Not sure where they get the lyrics from but the other suggestion was 'rot' which is probabily the only thing that hasn't been suggested here! Also the 'one oh one' is the 101.

I think those lyrics sites all steal from each other so just because several sites have certain lyrics, it does not mean they're correct. But, I'm the last one to chime in, I've got considerable hearing loss (going to so many concerts doesn't help) and part of my hearing loss is the inability to make out certain sounds. I'll defer to you all :)

Actually the meaning of one single word isn't so important as knowing what the interpret wants to say.
If you don't get this every lyric page is useless

I apologise in advance for throwing this in, too, but I thought maybe it's "shotgun forest wedding"?

@Rick, I know it's 101, but I thought I might as well put it the other way for pronunciation's sake.

@Danni, I'm pretty sure it "shotgun forced." A shotgun wedding is when a couple gets married because they have a kid on the way and they think there's really no other choice.

I just realized that perhaps it's an American phrase so that's why you probably haven't heard it.

Not sure if it makes sense, but how about:

You may be broken, scared and mad as hell
at the flesh of your own hearstrings,
but you were born to be a peasant, not a king.

    oops- meant "heartstrings"

You may be broken, scared and mad as hell
at the flesh of your own heartstrings,
but you were born to be a peasant, not a king.

Yeah, Raven, it's tear at the flesh of your own heartstrings, but it's weird, I thought I posted that when I was first discussing the thread, but apparently I didn't. I think I must be having a crazy person moment.

Oh, wait, I'm not, I think I posted that one during server maintenance and it disappeared.

@ that white dress, I know what a shotgun wedding is, which is why I thought the word "forced" seemed superfluous. To me it sounded like they had a shotgun wedding in a forest. But it was just a thought!

Ah okay. I thought it was redundant as well but I just assumed he needed another two syllables to make it sound how he wanted.

maybe we should tell the people about what TATE wants to say us with this song...
Just a little add to the lyrics...
So that you have to do more than searching the internet after some words.
