anyone here going?
anyone here going?
airborne were brilliant. i'd almost forgotten how great they are..
but man, what a craphole. had never been to oxegen (even though the line-up is always great, i've only ever heard bad things about it as a festival), really glad i was only there for the day, and hoping to never have to go back. i will, of course, if airborne play there again.. but i'm hoping they won't! is it too early to start a "play glastonbury 2010" campaign??
anyway, if anyone's interested, the set list went something like this:
(i'm pretty sure i'm not missing anything, but other than the first 3 and last song, i probably don't have the order right)
wishing well
this is nowhere
something new
happiness is overrated
does this mean you're moving on
sometime around midnight
goodbye horses
all i wanted (? the new song, can't remember if that's what it's called? love it anyways!)
innocence album version
very restricted on time i guess, which is kinda crap considering they were headlining that stage. but still, so so good :)
Thanks for posting Danni! How did they go down with the crowd? Did you get the impression anyone else was there to see them?
I'm impatient for Tuesday (Sheffield) but kept wondering if anyone from on here saw them at Dublin.
Am also excited for them headlining the Red Bull stage at T in the Park tonight. SO proud of "our" band :-)
thanks for reading gill! was starting to feel like i was talking to myself.. :)
well, i felt a bit sorry for them actually, they were on at the same time as kings of leon and nick cave, and i'd say 3/4 of the people at oxegen went just to see KOL. so they didn't get the crowd they deserved, and probably not that many new folks checking them out.
having said that, everyone who was there genuinely wanted to see them, so there were no annoying talking/pushing people like there was at the other acts i saw yesterday. they were fantastic, and absolutely made the trip worthwhile (it was bucketing rain for most of the day, my waterproofs decided mid-afternoon to no longer be waterproof and i got totally saturated) but oxegen just doesn't have the same atmosphere or vibe as other places, if that makes sense. it was still so so good to see them again.
have a great time in sheffield, gill! and anyone else going..
november feels like an age away, but i'm really looking forward to it. the olympia is one of my favourite venues. i think there's still tickets if anyone fancies a trip to dublin!
At the risk of sounding boring, of all the bands I devotedly follow, TATE are my number one gig (and I LOVE live bands). I've had some great gigs this year seeing other bands I love, and am looking forward to others later in the year, but none mean as much as seeing Airborne Toxic Event. Trouble is I want everyone else to love them the same; it's great that yesterday the other people you were with didn't shove/push/ talk and so on (I REALLY dislike that element in the crowd!!!).
Whereabouts do they hold Oxegen? I've only ever been to Lansdowne Road, oh yes, and 3 years ago we saw Morrissey in a park outside Dublin(!) sorry that sounds like an understatement "a park outside Dublin".
Sorry you got drenched but sounds like TATE made up for it. How close were you; did they spot you in the audience?
i totally agree, airborne are my fave live band, too, and i haven't really had one since the frames of about 10 years ago (my friends often joke about the airborne toxic event being my "new frames" :) ). going to gigs is one of my absolute favourite things to do, and there are bands i love going to see whenever they're over, but no one i would travel abroad for, and no one else i would have gone to oxegen for. and the talking/shoving people make me so angry, too.. *deep breaths*
aaanyways :) oxegen is held at punchestown racecourse in kildare, about 40 mins from dublin. so from that aspect it's handy, took something like 2 hours door to door to get to.
was right at the front at the barrier, which was awesome. no idea if they spotted me, or would know who i am, but it was pretty dark in the tent - i kind of got the feeling that everyone, including the lighting people, abandoned their posts to go to kings of leon!
also just realised i forgot "this losing" in my setlist.. how anyone could forget that song is beyond me :(
do you have far to travel to sheffield?
Sheffield is about 2 and a half hours away (we live on the east coast) but it can all depend on traffic as well ... sometimes a bit quicker or a bit longer depending on time of day (and if the motorway grinds to a halt ... eeek!).
And then of course Sheffield is not the easiest to drive round (their one way system defeats us every time even with satnav). But all worth it!
Silly lighting people deserting TATE for KOL. Eeejits. And I love "this losing". I think there are still tickets on sale for Tuesday, as well ..
Oh, and I meant to say, Danni, I bet they did actually see you.
wow, sounds like a bit of a trek. yeah, satnav is pretty useless in dublin too, i end up swearing A LOT anytime i try to use it. but i just keep getting myself lost..
and it'll so be worth it, have an amazing time! post reports.. and i hope the travel goes smoothly.
ha ha, don't tempt me with tickets gill, i looked into trying to get to sheffield before, and it definitely isn't straightforward from here :)
It must be a hard time headlining a smaller stage at a festival. Some festivals manage to get the balance right across the stages so the crowd is spread well, but I guess there are some bands out there that will just take the entire crowd. It sounds like KOL were one of those, looked like Killers also did at T. At least they weren't up against them there!
Sounds like you still had a great show though Danni. Its only a few months ago I saw them with about 6 others and they certainly put on a good show then
I would not have wanted to be a band up against Killers on Saturday! How difficult must THAT have been.
hey jules, yeah they were amazing, and it was just so good to see them!
i can imagine oxegen being particularly tough for the headliners of the smaller stages, as it just seems to attract the type of people who are either there specifically to see the headliners (I think it's supposed to be kings of leon's only irish gig this year), or who just aren't really that bothered about the music and will therefore go to whoever is the biggest act. KOL are huge here, probably more so even than the killers. ah well, whoever didn't go to airborne seriously missed out!
Hi people, I only came across this forum now, am new here!!
Anyways, litte late to be replying but meh! They played a brillant gig at oxegen, I was a little disapponted that the crowd was so small, but still, its was a good crowd! They would have got a bigger crowd in if they had been on earlier in the day in the new bands stage, a lot of people head in there just to check out ramdom new bands if they have nothing else to see. The crowd that was there was still better than the crowd in the acedamy in dublin back a few months ago, and I'd expect an even better again crowd at the olympia, cant wait for it now!!!!
hey timmay, yeah i'm really looking forward to the gig in the olympia too. it's the perfect venue for them. roll on november!
