I just noticed in passing that a few familiar things are mentioned a couple times in different places.

Ten thousand miles seems to be Mikel's favorite distance. Is there a reason for that or does it simply sound the best?

Also, Missy makes an appearance in Parson Red Heads!

And, obviously, locations, such as Silver Lake, are mentioned quite a bit.

So...yeah. Just thought that was kind of interesting.

No, since we're talking about reoccuring lyrics, I think this is fine. :-)

I've been meaning to start a thread like this, too. What I notice:

Mikel likes "like a child" and other variations a lot. From original version of All I Ever Wanted, "You were so quiet like a child," and from This Losing, "face just like a child's" and "we laughed just like children," and from Innocence, "such a beautiful child, such an awful waste," and there's probably more but that's all I can think of right now.

He also likes "eyes" and "face" a lot, too.

Anyone else have other examples were Mikel uses the same sort of lyrics?

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that one! I know he uses the child comparison in another song that I just cannot for the life of me remember at the moment. It's from All At Once, I can tell you that much. I've been awake too long...

He says "like you're just ten years old" in All For A Woman but that's not the one I'm thinking of. Wow, this is going to bug me.

It's no time for specifics but all at once appears in a song thats not all at once.

I remembered another child reference! From Half of Something Else: "I remember your face, like a child, the way that you blushed and the way that you smiled.". Another face reference, too.

I was going to start a thread about Mikel's use of the word "child" in a lot of his songs. It's kind of weird...

Mikel uses the phrase like a child in The Crack, too.

I don't know if it's weird, a child is one of the few unambiguous images of purity. I mean, aside from Ivory Soap and uncut heroin, I'm not sure what imagery I would use to show purity. That it doubles as innocence and wonderment is just a bonus.

He loooves the idea of innocence, he uses it quite a lot. I guess it ties into the whole "Like a child" aspect of things. A lot of songs I take to be about losing virginity/innocence and how he feels guilty about it. Either way, I love the idea of purity and how it can be lost so easily without a thought.

I think maybe he misses being a child and feels that growing up was too quick and painful - he also touches on it in Kids in the lyric "I was just 13 when I got my first taste of danger".

"My dear I fear" - in Missy and Gasoline

In interviews and writings and some songs, Mikel seems to love the word 'accoutrements.'

I agree with EV0L, I loved the child line in All I Ever Wanted but then I kept hearing it everywhere and it got a little weird.

I know this thread is a little older, but I also wanted to add dresses to the reoccurring themes in Mikel's songs :)

--a perfumed dress is more than I can stand
--I can't stand the way you look at me in that dress
--that white dress she's wearing, you haven't seen her for a while....

and maybe more, but it's late :P :)

Well, Girls In Their Summer Dresses is based off a short story. But the others are very likely about the same woman. It's possible he associates one particular dress with a specific fight or experience he had with her.

Umm, it may just be that it's late and I'm drinking, but it seems he mentions drinking an awful lot.

Also, the word/term "darling". Noticed he used it a lot on Loveline tonight, plus "Darling I wish it wasn't true" "Darling don't let me in" and I'm sure there's more, but honestly it's 2:15 am here and I can't see straight, not to mention think straight.

In This Losing their is a quote about a "glove" covered hand and in The Girls In The Summer Dresses a line says "this hand, this 'glove' this only thing I love."

Haha, I think you've got those mixed around but I get your meaning. I've have always wondered what This Losing is about.
