Mikel has started a "Song Of The Day" Twitter thread that I find very interesting. I'm always curious about what the musicians I listen to are listening to themselves. I created a Twitter account just so I could see his choices, much as it pained me to do so (create an account).
His first choice was "Atlantic City" by Bruce Springsteen which had me at "Hello". While everyone else was teaching their kids the "ABC" song, I was teaching my kids the words to "Atlantic City" (true story). Like so many Springsteen songs (Thunder Road, Jungleland come to mind) the words are visually graphic. He really paints a picture/choreographs a ballet with his words.
Anyhow, interesting tidbit. My kids once asked "Who is the chicken man?". So I researched (read Googled) it. Springsteen actually got the idea for "Atlantic City" after reading an article about the chicken man being blown up. Yup. There really was a chicken man. Who really got blown up. And not Colonel Sanders. And not by a deep-fat fryer.
The web site (http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1005) gives some interesting trivia about the song, including the identity of the chicken man :-)
Thanks Mikel!
P.S. (Note to Mikel):
As you are a writer as well as a musician, I would also be interested in tweets about books that you like.
I've recently been reading books by the author Jess Walter (i.e. The Financial Lives of the Poets) and couldn't help but think "If Mikel wrote a book, I bet it would be very similar to those written by Jess Walter in tone/style -- a lot funny and a little sad".
