    Mikel's Pick 01/13/2011:
    Das Racist
    Ek Shaneesh (Shut Up, Dude)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lLm0HYVrlg

"I am America. I am a pickup truck." Indeed.

    Gail's Pick 01/13/2011:
    The Wiggles
    Fruit Salad (Yummy Yummy)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB4MNu6W9sg

"Just be sure to use a plastic knife". Yummy, yummy indeed.

In case anyone was wondering whether or not Mikel has a sense of humor. The one guy's bouncing belly was kind of mesmerizing in a train-wreck sort of way. At first I thought it was Middle-East rap, but Wiki said the band members are actually from Brooklyn and San Francisco. Well, maybe THAT explains it.

Oddly enough, the band released their first album "Shut Up, Dude" (with the hit single "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell") as a free (what? free? scooorrree!) download. As if the internet wasn't dangerous enough for my kids already.

Someone must have liked it, though. Pitchfork Media (yeah, I've never heard of them either) gave the .... thing .... a 7.8 review. Dudes! You KNOW which side of the ever-after has the pitchforks, so, again, maybe that explains it.

All this is my way of saying: I didn't so much not like it as REALLY HATE IT. Kidding. It was entertaining in a plucking my eyelashes out one-by-one fashion.

Gail, thanks for the bit of background--I got a minute in and quickly hit the back browser. I'm guessing Mikel has to have a sense of humor...

"I wish I'd thought of this" genius

The url provided by Mikel doesn't work. Use this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHZVGqqf3gg

Yes. Those pesky capital letters matter.

    Well done, Mr. Jollett.

This is an interesting song with a variety (by "variety" I mean > 5 million) of remixes, most with the disturbing tendency toward too much bass. Of those, I think I might actually prefer this one to the original:

    Gail's Pick 01/14/2011:
    The XX
    Basic Space (Pariah Remix)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXS3n94XPjI

or maybe I just like the video better and I'm extrapolating. Anyway, if you have, oh say, 15 hours or more to spare you can check out additional remixes of which a partial list is provided below:

    Jamie's Space Bass Remix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkOUIGzVJZA
    Mount Kimbie Remix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddUeIqeZn0Y
    Astronomer Remix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXdLjxYWi6Q
    Sampha Remix - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvMlQz5IYYQ

    Yawn...

Shower Beer Graveyard Remix (No. I did NOT make that up) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqJtDwoDpfc
Dirty Socks And Your Mother Remix - OK. I made that one up.

    Stretch...

The band posted a picture of them at the shooting of their new video, I took a chance and drove down there to try and get a glimpse of them but no luck, I got there too late, I got excited for a second because I saw a film crew there but it turned out to be Justin Timberlake movie on the same lot. BUMMER!!! I cant believe I actually found the location with the help of certain aspects of the city and the Staples Center sign. Maybe next time.

    Mikel's Pick 01/19/2011:
    Buzzcocks
Why Can't I Touch it? (Singles Going Steady)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIHAkqCls4A
    "All. Time. Classic. –Mikel"

The Buzzcocks formed in 1976 and are considered by multiple sources to have been an important influence on the nascent punk rock movement. The were inspired primarily by the Sex Pistols, but differentiated themselves by infusing elements of pop into their music. While the name of the groups sounds a little (nudge, wink) x-rated, it actually was the result of combining the slang words "buzz" (for excitement) and "cocks" (for friends, mates).

Mikel's selection, "Why Can't I Touch It" is a loonnnggg song (6:34), so you'd think that, given such a significant period of time, they could figure out "Why They Can't Touch It" before the song ended. You'd think.

Here is a breakdown of the song (Yes, I actually timed it):

    0 Minutes - 1 Minute Why Can't I Touch It?
    1 Minute - 2 Minutes Why Can't I Touch It? (Round 2)
2 Minutes - 3 Minutes Why, Oh, Why, Oh, Why Can't I Still Not Touch It? (Round 3)

At this point I was in tears doing the math while still listening to the song. If they have 6:34 then they have enough time to ask this question 3 more times. Shiittttt.

3 Minutes - 3:45 Minutes Mildly interesting, repetitive bridge that at least shut them up
3:45 Minutes - 4:45 Minutes Moommmmmmyyyyyyy!!!! Why, why, why, why, oh why why why WHY can't I
    TOUCH IT? (Round 4)

At this point I wanted to put the entire band in the time-out chair. "Because I SAID so, that's why!"

4:45 Minutes - 6:34 Minutes Repeat mildly interesting repetitive bridge ad nauseam

It made me think of part of a Robin Williams monologue I once saw --
"Under redundant in the dictionary it says 'See redundant'"

    Gail's Pick 01/19/2011:
    M C Hammer
U Can't Touch This (Please Hammer Don't Hurt Em)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIHAkqCls4A
Because. Mommy. Said. So. That's. Why.

    Mikel's Pick 01/20/11:
    Broken Social Scene
Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl (You Forgot It in People)
    @bssmusic - http://youtube.com/watch?v=xl3PyTqsc5c

"Like kittens humming you to sleep. This is some white people shit. -Mikel"

Broken Social Scene is a musical collective that has ranged in size from as few as 6
to as many as 19 members. Formed in Canada in 1999, the group is known for grand orchestrations
featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds, and violins. This style of music is occasionally
    referred to as "baroque pop".

    I have to say that even if I didn't like this song (which I do ... I mean I don't ...
I don't not like the song), I'd have to give it a by.

There's no way I can hate on anything once humming kittens have been invoked.

    Mikel's Pick 01/26/2011:
    Billy Bragg and Wilco
    Walt Whitman's Niece (Mermaid Avenue)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GDU6ns2mRM
"Don't you want to go to whatever bar everyone is singing this song? -Mikel"

My answer to Mikel's question (And I won't say which question): "Hell, yes!"

I agree with Alex (Not to say which Alex).
This is a great song (But I can't say which song).

"Walt Whitman's Niece" is a song on the album "Mermaid Avenue" which is unique in that it is composed entirely of newly discovered lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie. Those lyrics were put to music by British singer Billy Bragg and the American band Wilco. The project was organized by Guthrie's daughter, Nora, after discovering volumes of song lyrics while compiling her father's papers upon his death.

    Mikel's Pick 01/28/2011:
    Delta Spirit
    Strange Vine (Ode To Sunshine)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEDbbXDzIDM
"We are 2 indians in the same canoe..." I love this song. -Mikel"

This is a really pretty song.

I expected to learn that the band originated from the bible belt. There's a bluesy-spiritual-southern vibe to their music. Actually they're from Long Beach, California.
    Go figure.

But! Then I discovered that the inspiration for the band name was the taxidermy company "Delta Spirit
Taxidermy Station of North Central Alabama" that is, incidentally, owned by a relative ("Uncle Red")
of one of the band members. Ahhhh... ha. Bingo!

    Per Wiki:

"The group combines unconventional instruments such as trash cans lids and orchestral bass drums,
multi-instrumentalism and spiritually themed lyrics into a hybrid of rock and northern soul"

... which is amazing because I'm always saying, "What that song REALLY needed was a trash can lid
-- and an orchestral bass drum".

    Gail's Pick 01/28/2011:
    Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here (Wish You Were Here)

    Mikel's Pick 01/30/2011:
    Neutral Milk Hotel
The King Of Carrot Flowers, Parts 1 to 3 (In The Aeroplane Over the Sea)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4avoEbGjYu0&feature=player_embedded
"As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for" -Mikel

Isn't it nice that they now have medication that allows schizophrenics to live nearly normal lives? Except for the occasional relapse, they can walk, talk, and write songs in a manner that seems almost normal.

The King of Carrot Flowers - Lyrics

    Part 1
    1. "When you were young you were the king of carrot flowers"
Awww. That's nice. I have no idea what it means, but it sounds nice.

    2. "And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder"
    Ewwwwwww

    3. "And from above you how I sank into your soul"
    Pretty.

    4. "And dad would dream of all the different ways to die"
    Oh. Disturbing.

(Medication is beginning to wear off)

    Part 2

    "I love you Jesus Christ
    Jesus Christ I love you
    Yes I do

    And on the lazy days
The dogs dissolve and drain away"

(Maaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Get Jeffy his pills! Quick! He's holding Fluffy and some Drano!)

    Part 3

"Up and over we go through the wave and undertow
I will float until I learn how to swim inside my mother
In a garbage bin until I find myself again again up
And over we go mouths open wide and spitting still
And I will spit until I learn how to speak up thru the ....."

(C'mon, Jeff. Put your nice jacket with the wrap-around arms on. We're going for another little ride. You like rides, don't you? Gooodddd boy. Goodddd Jeff.)

    Mikel's Pick 01/31/2011:
    Mumford & Sons
Sigh No More (Sigh No More)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1PpeDRfxp4&feature=player_embedded

"Just stand in the middle of the vapid pop universe and SING WHAT YOU BELIEVE. -Mikel"

Mumford & Sons distinguishes itself as a band that is deeply influenced by literature both personally and professionally. Mikel's selection, "Sigh No More", for example, heavily references William Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing".

As Marcus Mumford points out "You can rip off Shakespeare all you like; no lawyer's going to call you up on that one."

In fact, the band's allusions to literary passages are so endemic they are sometimes referred to as "The Bookshop Band".

I went to the band's website (http://www.mumfordandsons.com) and was thoroughly engrossed.
They recommend books. They share recipes (complete with pictures)! They use the word "whilst"!
I liked the band before, but now, now? I'm..in..love.

So, in honor of "The Bookshop Band":

    Gail's Pick 01/31/2011:
    John Steinbeck
    Cannery Row
"Just stand out in this vapid universe we inhabit and READ A BOOK. - Gail"

Airborne77, not everyone has access to twitter or facebook. Not everyone WANTS access to twitter or facebook. I thoroughly enjoy Mikel's choices and there ought to be a place where someone can go and see what they are without having to join a social network. That's why every post starts out with Mikel's selection. I try to add some insight and humor. If you don't like it don't read it. That simple. Now, go pick some daisies and lighten up.

    Mikel's Pick 02/10/2011:
    Dr. Dog
    Shadow People (Shame, Shame)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_4_By9NJOc
"It's the right night for the wrong company... Who's with me?" -Mikel

I really liked this song and the video was just ... sweet.

Anyhow, about the band (courtesy of Google):

Dr. Dog offers a variety of quality pet supplies including its own line of pet health care. Dr. Dog is not a veterinarian (he just plays one on tv) or a dog ... or a dog that is a veterinarian. It is a brand/band name (so there). They stand behind their cat and dog products and guarantee all their pet supplies. The pet of the month for February 2011 is "Wiggles", a dog that appears to be a chocolate lab.

Hmmmm.... so strange, not a single mention of their music. Oh well, moving on.

I admit to having tried desperately to find some way to link Mikel's song of the day to my song choice, other than the ubiquity of matching hats. But, damn it! Once I connected the hat dots, I couldn't seem to move on.

Alex! Yea! I think it's awesome you're joining the party. You brought beer, right? :-)

I loved your comment "very, very unique voice". Truly. I kinda prefer the description used by by critic Daniel Durchhol though, I'm afraid. He said it's a voice that sounds "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."

    Mikel's Pick 02/14/2011:
    Underworld
    Born Slippy .NUXX (Single)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlLWFa1b1Bc
"I totally admit I first heard this in Trainspotting." -Mikel

"Born Slippy .NUXX" is a single that was released in 1996. It was preceded in January 1995 by the single "Born Slippy", which featured the ".NUXX" mix as a B-side. The band has stated that the pounding, relentless rhythm and shouted lyrics of the track were originally meant as a joke. The ".NUXX" name was inspired by a computer fault that generated that suffix for working files.

    Sooo...

While researching this Song Of The Day I came across this really cool tool. It's called "Leon's Random Song Lyrics Generator"(http://www.leonatkinson.com/random/index.php/lyrics.html). It takes random words (random!) and strings them together to instantly give you a brand-spankin' new song.

See? I just wrote a little number called "I Don't Like Molendinarious Saddlebow" in the amount of time that it took to take a sip of coffee. Here's the ".Nuxx" version:

I Don't Like Moledinarious Saddlebow (.Nuxx version) by .... **ME**!

    I unload.
    I will apostate?

Contralto bay doesn't imitation a wrest's bashful shew.
    You hove.

Molendinarious saddlebow and piper regarding my lupulinic inundation and your irishman and
molendinarious saddlebow and molendinarious saddlebow scurry?
    How did we parade?

When did epimeal robins and mayor tracheobronchial gutwort reverse?
You don't desirously increase six tombesters.
You will augment sir rule and molendinarious saddlebow?
    ........

That was fun! Here, let me do another one. Wait for it... Done. Ohhhh! Ohhhh! This one is called.... "Born Slippy" ;-)

    Gail's Pick 02/14/2011:
    Death Cab For Cutie
I Will Follow You Into The Dark (Plans)
