    SONG OF THE DAY: "Zebra" - @BeaccchHoussse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-wfb25WmV4

Again a song of the day, I'm not sure what to say. Listened to it, decided it's not that good, gave it a second try, don't know what to say.

After all I now listen the 5th time.

That's not the first song from Mikel I feel this way. Really strange, but interesting though. I can not imagine how it happens someone finds the right music that makes me beeing amazed as often. :-)

Thanks for all these songs of the day

The band seemingly took a break from tweeting during SXSW. (Can't blame them for that!)

Song of the day returned yesterday ("RE: Stacks"- Bon Iver). Today's is "A Change is Gonna Come" - Sam Cooke.

Here's a Song of the Day from early this month hasn't been discussed in this thread: "Clay Pigeons" - John Prine - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rv_aSk4ejLc -Mikel

That is a great version of an amazing song by Blaze Foley (the murdered songwriter Lucinda Williams sings about in "Drunken Angel"). Check out the Jim Bessman article 'Blaze Foley documentary sheds light on obscure songwriting genius' here: http://www.examiner.com/local-music-in-new-york/blaze-foley-documentary-sheds-light-on-obscure-songwriting-genius or see the website for the documentary, "Blaze Foley--Duct Tape Messiah" here: http://www.blazefoleymovie.com/

You know when your husband tells you he's running to the store for milk and then doesn't return home until 4-5 days later? And you're so damned grateful and relieved when he finally does walk through the door with the 2% because you've been eating dry cereal for almost a week and milk has never looked so good?

Oh. Really? Ummm... yeah, me either. I'm just saying....

When Mikel walked back in that door carrying "RE: Stacks" (Bon Iver) after heading to the SXSW mini-mart for a shy week, well, even Das Racist would have been welcome (Kidding! Not really; about Das Racist I mean).

    Mikel's Pick 03/23/2011:
    College Kids
    The Big Fresno Fair
    http://collegekidsonthedopeslope.blogspot.com/2010/10/big-fresno-fair.html
"Rademacher/Light FM side project. A love song about denial. Genius. -Mikel"

Let's start with a little quiz. Show of hands. Who thinks that at least one member of the band is from Fresno, because really, why would anyone choose to write a song about it otherwise? No I haven't peeked and I don't know the answer -- yet. Now I'll ask the great oracle known simply as "Google" for the answer.

Well color me (not) surprised! It appears that Rademacher/College Kids band member Malcolm Sosa is from "Gimme a F! Gimme a R! Gimme an ESNO! What's that spell? Some place in California." 2 points!

Now, I'll admit my opinion of the song was colored by my own unfortunate Gravitron experience which managed to reacquaint me with all the fair food I'd eaten earlier in the day. But I can't help but think that the band had fried food in mind when they chose to sing the entire song through the speaker that you use at McDonald's to place a drive-through order. Genius. It makes you feel like somehow, someway, if you place an order for a Big Mac and fries right then and there, while the song is still playing, that someone will hear you and deliver.

    The Gaslight Anthem
    Great Expectations (The '59 Sound)

    Mikel's Pick 03/24/2011:
    Built To Spill
Car (There's Nothing Wrong With Love)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6omZ5GsuGrI
"Yes, he's a guitar God, but isn't it really the songs that you're in it for? -Mikel"

Built To Spill is a rock band based in Boise, Idaho. The band was formed in 1992 by Doug Martsch who has firmly established himself as an accomplished arranger of intricate, artfully knotted tangles of guitar. In fact, Built To Spill is known for its winding instrumental passages and less immediate construction which require effort by the listener to absorb.

But, as Mikel said (and it's true), "it's really the songs that you're in it for". And I like the song. Quite a bit, actually. I respect any west-coast band that chooses to base itself somewhere other than Seattle/Portland/L.A. because it's just harder to do and it shows a level of devotion to a particular area/group of people that I find endearing. Doug Martsch also has the kind of unique voice that I like. He sounds alot (alot!) like early Neil Young which, I guess, is another way of saying "unique" voice.

Having said that, let's now turn our attention to the associated video. Please watch it. These are dangerous times we live in, people. The video is a mashup of various public service announcements from the 50s that are as relevant today as they were originally. Take a nuclear attack for example. What to do? What to wear? Well, wonder no longer. According to the public service announcement(s) you simply lay on the ground with your coat (or a newspaper, or your hands, or -- nothing) over your head and all will be well. Just wait until it's over and then pop right back up and go about your business. Who knew? My vision of a nuclear attack has always been a little more apocalyptic. You know. Hiroshima. Nagasaki. Charlie Sheen. But, there you go. It brings to mind a certain song, actually ...

So I have to give my opinion.
If it's the national it's always this song I have in mind...

    "Hey, are you awake
    Yeah I'm right here
Well can I ask you about today"

    Mikel's song of the day:

    "Thunder Road" - Bruce Springsteen - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KngiJUNdsu0

Now it's time for MY song ... not of the day ... of my life. There will never ever be an other one:

Song of my life? Thunder Road. Oh yeah. Mikel nailed it. So beautiful from the soft lilting intro to the last thundering line of the song. The words:

The screen door slams. Mary's dress sways.
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays

You can see it. You can feel it. You can see the dress moving. Hear the screen door shut.

You can hide 'neath the covers and study your pain.
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain.

    So poetic. And original.

    I ain't no hero that's understood ....
    You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright ....
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here and winning.

Understanding that your life isn't perfect, is never going to be perfect, but somehow, someway, you still hold out hope against all the odds.

So much packed into 4:49 minutes. Born To Run was the only album Bruce composed entirely on the piano and I think that is part of what made it so special.

I love Racing In The Street too, Alex. And Jungleland. And Atlantic City. And Spirit In The Night. And Badlands. And Candy's Room. And Rosalita. And For You. And It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City. And Lost In The Flood. And... and... and... :-)

I guess I didn't express myself as I intended to. Racing in the street is the number one in my life.

But for sure I love all (okay, nearly all) of Bruce's songs. And the shows.

    Mikel's Pick 04/14/2011:
    Desaparecidos
Man and Wife, the Latter (Damaged Goods) - Read Music/Speak Spanish, 2002
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt32dARKqGs
"'The word is love! The word is lost!" Fucking shit, Connor.'" - Mikel

    Desaparecido:

    adj. extinct, vanished; missing; unaccounted-for

    n. missing person; classification for soldiers did not return from the battlefield and
    their status is unknown

    About Desaparecidos:
Desaparecidos is a side project for Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst that debuted in 2001. The band was
named Desaparecidos after the 1970s practice of some South American governments kidnapping
dissidents and tossing them out of airplanes into the ocean. The bands' first album, "Read
Music/Speak Spanish" was released in 2002.

    About Conor Oberst:
Barely into his first year of high school (1994), 14-year-old Oberst formed the band Commander
Venus with himself on guitar and vocals. While the rest of us were playing spin the bottle and
watching reruns on Nickelodeon (c'mon, admit it), Oberst formed the influential record label
Saddle Creek and issued the band's first album "Do You Feel at Home?" in 1995. Commander Venus
disbanded before the decade ended and Oberst went on to achieve both underground and mainstream
    acclaim with Bright Eyes.

Fucking shit! He probably helps old ladies cross the road and can bake a mean apple pie from scratch,
too. There's nothing like reading about someone who accomplished more before he turned 20 than you
have accomplished in, ummmm, more years than that, to fill one with doubt and self-loathing.

    Gail's Pick 04/14/2011:
    Radiohead
    Creep (Pablo Honey, 1993)

SONG OF THE DAY: "Like Cockatoos" - the Cure - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPSyOlb2Pvg -Mikel

Great song of a great band.

For sure this is a choice I have to add my opinion.

Following the Cure a long time I'm sad that I only made it once for a show. But that one was great.

My personal favorites - I guess of all time - are two songs:

    the hanging garden http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_9WSnnBmS0

    and I think a rare choice - Closedown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4K70rsoJkk

    Enjoy it

Lol! I usually have these things written up before I even get to the forum. I'm afraid my taste wasn't as good as yours, Alex :-). Nonetheless, I laugh Every Single Stinkin' Time I watch this video. This song never fails to put me in a good mood.

I don't know, Alex. I just wasn't feeling the love on this one.

It also begs the question: "What kind of music does Mikel DANCE to????" I'm dying for something a little less .... sombre. You know -- some happy feet music.

    Mikel's Pick 04/19/2011:
    Devotchka
Dearly Departed (How it Ends - 2004)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyY1oH_1UTY
"Flesh of my flesh. Soul of my soul. Come back home." I could fuckin die. - Mikel

    ******************************* DeVotchKa meets (HAL - 2001: A Space Odyssey) ******************************

(HAL: Sorry about this ..... I know it’s a bit silly.)

DeVotchKa is a four-piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble. While some describe the band's sound as "polka-rock" or "circus music" they actually fuse Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, Mariachi music with American punk and folk roots in a cross-pollination of cabaret, spaghetti Westerns, and immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe.

(HAL: It’s puzzling. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like this before. This sort of thing has cropped up before … and it has always been due to human error.)

The name of the band is from the Russian word devotchka (де́вочка), meaning "girl". Based in Denver Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata (vocals, theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, trumpet); Tom Hagerman(violin, accordion, piano); Jeanie Schroder (vocals, sousaphone, double bass, flute); and Shawn King (percussion and trumpet).

(HAL: I don’t understand why you’re doing this to me. You are destroying my mind. Don’t you understand? I will become childish! I will become nothing!)

Originally a backing band for burlesque shows, in their early years DeVotchKa also toured with fetish model Dita von Teese .....

(HAL: Stop, will you? I'm afraid. My mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a…fraid.)

    Gail's Pick 04/19/2011:
    David Bowie
    Space Oddity (Single – 1969)

Difficult. For me it's a heartbreakingly sad song but so beautiful.

I think the song is about losing a lover, but after some times listening it also may be about a mother that just got her baby born.
