NEW SINGLE, Second Album release details, Radio session tonight, Colorado Symphony tomorrow..
Good morning,
Let’s not pretend this isn’t a big moment. That would be kind of stupid. Deep breath. Eyes closed. OK. Here goes.
It’s been 4 years. Nearly 400 shows. Close to 400,000 miles traveled. 50 songs written for this record. Many of them were played first for many of you.
Including:
Our new song “Changing” will be available on February 1st. You will probably be able to hear it online first. Probably on our YouTube channel. Probably right HERE.
The song was originally called “Something You Own.” It’s a song about conflict and resolution, resisting and accepting Change. But lets not spend too much time dancing about architecture… Better just to listen and let it become part of the day..
Our second record will be titled All at Once. It will be released on April 25th in Europe and April 26th in North America.
It’s probably both quieter and louder than our first record. There wasn’t any particular decision to be either like or unlike our first record. In some ways, it is the former; in others, the latter. It’s called “All at Once” because the songs deal with the idea of sudden change—how life generally doesn’t change incrementally. Your parents die, a child is born, the airplane shakes, a former love from a former life walks casually by you on the street, and suddenly everything is different. We live in the quiet passages between these extraordinary moments of change. It’s exhilarating. It’s terrifying. It can be monstrously disfiguring. It can be potentially redemptive.
So much of it has to do with loneliness. There’s something about sharing these things that make them less terrifying. That’s why this has to do with you and what you’ve given us in the past four years. Because there’s a moment of recognition that happens where you see yourself. You see your thoughts in others and feel a kinship, as if the idea isn’t some horrible thing locked in your head, but one of many ideas that are part of a grand narrative that all people share. And there’s a true joy to seeing the reality of it this way—like the perspective of someone 100 million miles away on some tiny speck in space, looking back at Earth. That’s what writing even this feels like. Hello. I would like it if we knew each other.
There’s more, but then the record isn’t actually out for a few months… For now, it’s important that you know that you are part of this. And we did not take it lightly. And nothing was by accident. We are very proud of this record and the songs about:
conflict and war and disorientation and the kids on the wall and the girl who appears in a dream and the graveyard near the house and the parents we knew and the prisons they escaped and the ones they constructed for us and how, in the final analysis, we did so much simply to catch the eye of someone we loved.
All at Once.
We’ve got more big news to announce, including plans for shows where we can meet again, but we’re going to wait until February 15th to do that. It’ll give us something to look forward to.

This is great news! I can’t wait to get my hands on the new album. Everything that I’ve heard of it from scouring the ‘net has been fantastic.
Finally! The moment we’ve all been waiting for is very near. These next 4 months will be exciting because there will be lots of new music from many of my favorite bands. “All At Once” will be amazing and I can’t wait to hear the entire album.
Re “Changing” (previously “Something You Own”) – I like it!! thanks – all the best with the new album!

Holy crap i am so freaking excited! ! ! ! I love your music and alredy feel like i’m gona love the new album. And what you say about change is spot on.
Change for me was: my dad almost dying and then me moving permanently back to the US from Indonesia. The trip was about 48 hours but ive been here two years and still feel like a foreigner sometimes.
Change is good, although abrupt. We have freedom to make choices but to control our predetermined path.
I will buy ur single asap! And listen to it till then!!
I seriously love it, great choice for a 1st single!
You don’t have the slightest idea how much I’m looking forward to finally seeing you again in Hamburg 🙂
Oh and I CAN’T WAIT for the new album!
Hullo, guys.
There’s so much that I want to say- but first, congratulations. I’m sure this album will surpass the first album tremendously, which is an enormous feat considering the first is my favourite album in the history of ever. Second, thank you. This may not seem much coming from a seventeen year old boy in England, but you honestly have no idea how much this band means to me. Third, good luck- for everything you do in the future, you deserve it. It’s such a shame that I’ve never seen you live, but I’ve made myself a promise that one day I will do- even if I have to travel all the way to America to do so. Keep up the good work, guys. I literally cannot wait to hear the new album- I must have listened to “Changing” 20 times already 🙂
A loyal fan, always.
James 🙂
Awesome song 😀 Love the lyrics too. Can’t wait to see you guys live, see you @ paradiso the 7th of februari!

Just heard it on FNX here in Boston and I almost crapped my pants. It was totally unexpected (you don’t check Twitter for a day and miss everything)but once I heard that first note I knew what it was!!!
i am vibrating with excitement. i loooovvvvve you guys….and lady, the pretty little lady. thanks for the update. can’t wait.
Had an amazing concert at park west this past fall! Was a great experience at meet and greet and after the show and I thank you all! Cant wait to hear the new album and see you back in Chicago. Peace!!
HI!
You have to play in Providence, RI with the RI philharmonic Orchestra.
they play at the VMA: http://www.VMA.com
Perfect for you!
feb 15!!!!!
A different but equally compelling and unique sound. We are all looking forward to the release in April but in the meantime the All I Ever Wanted dvd/cd is holding us over. Maybe the best live album I have ever heard. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen you guys 6 times and no doubt I’ll be on the road again in 2011. Did anyone else hear the ghost of John Lennon – post Beatles – in Changing? How about the question Mikel asks in the first verse which is answered in the last? Would you expect anything else from a Stanford student? 🙂
See you guys soon and say hello to Pete for me.

BRAVO! Such a wonderful enthralling and gorgeous performance tonight with the Colorado Symphony. You are amazing performers and musicians and I didnt want the night to end. Thank you for sharing your new songs with us…. can’t wait to buy the new album. Safe travels 🙂
Oh, wow…you put on a wonderful show last night with the Colorado Symphony. Your music is transcendent, at once both raw and elegant. Your band is a gift to us all and I feel so fortunate to have seen you four times in Denver/Boulder now. And talking to you in person is more exhilarating than any fan could ever hope for. I love you for your musicianship, your humanity and the connection you’ve given us. Thank you!
TATE w/ CO Symp. Time pasted waaaay tooo fast! Wish we could do it all over again tonight! and in slo motion.
Thanks to everyone who made the night such an extraordinary event!
(and beyond the music -Sensational dress anna! wow are you ever slim!! not to mention TALENTED! and p.s. you made my husbands day)
Beautiful show last night and AMAZING single! Counting the days for the next album!
INCREDIBLE show last night with the Symphony. The two hours felt like ten minutes. Can’t wait for the new record.
“Changing” is absolutely beautiful. And you were all absolutely beautiful last night with the Colorado Symphony. “Numb” sticks with me the most from last night. I can’t wait to hear it on the record.
Thank you for being such wonderful people and sharing such gorgeous songs with all of us. So glad to be a part of it!
FABULOUS….Am sooooo glad that the new album will be released in April. Hope you will all come to the Midlands, G.B. again so we can meet up and watch another great show.
Keep up the good work,
Love Annie and Freya xxx
I am so damn excited for this. You guys are by far one of the greatest bands making music right now, if not the best. I’ve been spreading your music down here in south florida, and I’d do anything to see you guys in concert.
Keep it up, -Gus
Words cannot express the show I saw on Saturday. I have seen a lot of shows in a lot of places in my lifetime. I had the extreme pleasure of seeing this one. It was one of the best, if not the best, shows I have ever seen.
To have the CSO back you (the band) up and how seamless it was really shows the talent that you (as a band) have. I was moved at so many occasions to have tears streaming from my eyes. I think that the energy of the sum of the show could really be felt after “sometime around Midnight”. The standing ovation after that song, and so many others was just a little bit of what we as an audience were able to express. I wish we could have expressed so much more.
I will not go on and on, even though I could. I really want to just say thank you. Thank you for doing the show, thank you for the emotion that your music brings. It has been so long since I have heard a new band and though “WOW, this is really something.”
Long ago The Airborne Toxic Event brought to me the excitement of a new band really being amazing. But on Saturday night I was truly touched in so many ways.
While we as an audience were thanked many time for the ovation, it is truly the audience that needs to be thanking you. I see great things, and hope to see The Airborne Toxic Event again and again.
Thank You
Chris
My wife and I love “Changing”. Can’t wait for the new album to come out! Hoping you’ll be playing your new songs live for us back home in LA soon!
Your first album we found by accident in a rented car on the island Lefkada in Greece. We were sold at once. Back in Holland we found out that there was just that one album. Since then your album is our regular gift for every birthday or other festivity of al our friends.
We are very happy that the second album is coming soon. Can’t wait! And we will come and see you in Paradiso Amsterdam next month. Can’t wait for that too.
ps. you have some very young fans too, our kids are age 9, 6, 3 and 2 and can already sing along with some of your lyricks (and that without speaking English)
Looking forward to your new album. We got the cd/dvd of the concert at Disney Concert Hall just recently in response to airplay of “Sometime after midnight” – talk about changes all at once! The music just clicked into our hearts we are now full fans! Hope you make it to Canada soon – Ontario!!?? All the best to you on your journey!
i totally ditto what Chris said. the Colorado Symphony show was out of this world. We were lucky enough to go down to the meet & greet after and I must say that I’ve never heard of, nor met a more gracious group of people. thanks so much for sharing your talents and at the same time not getting caught up in them and/or yourselves. I wish i could take the next few weeks off from my life & just go to every show in Europe, but, you know I’ve got two small children & whatnot… 😉 why couldn’t you have been around a few years ago when I had the time & resources to be a groupie??
but i feel like we aren’t addressing the elephant in the room- the writing! the beautiful words above I’m guessing were written by Mikel??? I stumbled upon an article that he had written for Men’s Health magazine & it was awesome. Please can we have a novel from you, dear? just don’t let it take away from your time writing, recording, promoting or performing music though, mmmkay? just clone yourself or something….
much love!
Celeste
Love the new single…still waiting for you to come to Sacramento someday. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Super duper excited. Can’t come fast enough. 🙂 I’ve been waiting for a new album for forever!
There’s been plenty between the first album and other misc singles to enjoy over for the past couple of years, but I’m even more eagerly awaiting the new album! This is the most original stuff going right now.
